Kentucky Shakespeare returns to the Actors Theatre of Louisville stage to present the Louisville Premiere of this new adaptation by acclaimed playwright Lauren Gunderson! Before they were the famous March sisters, they were Louisa May Alcott’s real sisters, and this lively and energetic adaptation tells their story faithfully and with joy. In 19th century New England, witty Jo, beautiful Meg, gentle Beth, and spirited Amy grow up, make mistakes, have adventures, and fall in love. With their father away at war, the March sisters are nurtured by their wise and selfless Marmee and entertained by their headstrong energetic neighbor Laurie. A timeless tale of family, resilience, and a determined young writer finding her way in the world.
“…The production’s strength lies in its emotional core. Gunderson’s trademark style — a blend of quippy dialogue and profound sentimentality — shines through… the overall narrative arc remains deeply moving, successfully tugging at the heartstrings of theatergoers.” – Stage and Cinema
“…A new adaptation by Lauren Gunderson… avoids the sentimental piety that mars some versions by using more language from Alcott’s astonishing book. As a result, more of the wit and complexity of Alcott’s characters come alive.” – NewCity Chicago
“This is a solid, heartfelt production that succeeds in making a classic story feel fresh and relevant while honoring both Alcott’s novel and her lived experience.” – BroadwayWorld
“Finally, a fresh and fitting take on Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women…” – Buzz Center Stage
